Which is best for Massage: Oil, Lotion, or Cream?
This fall I am attending Massge therapy school, and I was curious to know which people prefer, Oil, Lotion, or Cream? Is their a difference to you? What are the pros and cons of each? Thanks!
They all have their pros and cons. It's going to be an individual decision for you.
Oil has the best glide, but it doesn't absorb, so your clients are going to leave oily. Even if you don't opt for an oil for regular use, keep one on hand for really hairy men. Creams and lotions tend to get stuck in hair and knot it. Kind of makes a mess. If you do use oil, be careful to know what kind of oil it is. Some oils are made from nuts, and you don't want to use those on people with nut allergies. If it's a blend, check the ingredients list. My oil of choice is jojoba.
Cream is really nice because it glides better than lotion and doesn't absorb as quickly, but you have to use more of it than you would oil, and it gets expensive.
Lotion absorbs a little too well to be very practical for a full body massage. I use it on hands and feet because it does penetrate so well (softens some of that rough skin and then absorbs so they don't leave with stuff on their hands and feet), and sometimes I mix it with my oil if their skin is particularly dry.
I actually prefer the option you did not mention (you probably don't know about), which is gel. Gel is like a thickened oil. It does pretty much everything an oil does, but I find that I use less of it because it's thicker.
When you start experimenting with products, go to www.massagewarehouse.com and get their 3 for $20 option. For $20 you pick three products from a list, and it's less than buying them outright in most cases. It's a good way to try stuff out and see what you like.
