I have a neck problem. What are the chances of a full recovery?
I have had acute neck pain for 2 weeks but have had a stiff neck (but have full movement) for 2 years or more. This week I have had a ct scan of my cervical spine which has showed 2 protruding discs at c4/5 and c6/7 which cause indenting of the thecal sac. I have a disc bulge at c5/6 too.
I am wondering what the main causes of this kind of problem can be. I had a nasty fall down the bedroom steps 5 years ago and fractured the head of my humerus..could this have been the cause? I have had no other injuries / accidents. I do have bad posture (very round shouldered) could this be the cause?
I am having physiotherapy and my GP has said that if the pain doesn't improve I may require surgery! What would this involve? I am a nurse but have not had any dealings with this kind of problem before and I will ask my GP when I see her tomorrow but its driving me nuts not knowing what my prospects are going to be. Is this going to be a long term problem? Thanks for your help everyone.
Physiotherapy, especially those trained in the "McKenzie" technique or manual therapy can help repostion the disc through movement...the disc is a very dynamic structure and it can change position quite readily.
If you had a fall years ago but did not experience any neck symptoms at that time, it is probably an unrelated experience as disc related pain is usually pretty immediate. The most common cause for displacement of the vertebral discs is poor posture. Therefore, posture correction is usually the first step to recovery.
Many people with disc displacement who undergo PT can be symtpom free in 6-8 visits with the McKenzie approach. Yet, it requires life long management of posture correction and 1 or 2 daily exercises. This is because once the disc has been breached, it has a weakness of the annular ring that is subject to further displacement.
Those who fail to heal successfully may undergo cortisone injections which can make the exercise regimine more successful and help with the overall inflammatory response.
If surgery is indicated, usually it involves either removal of the herniated portion of the disc, or removal of the lamina of the vertebrae...otherwise known as a laminectomy.
Some rules of thumb...if your pain is intermittent and does not radiate all the way to the hand, your chances for a full recovery are all that much better.
