I'm 15, African American, and I want to transition from relaxed hair to natural hair.I need hair care tips...?
I need tips on everything from shampoos and conditioners to hairstyles and styling equipment..
First off, congrats- I'm 16 and i'm almost done re-transitioning after being fully natural then being forced to get a perm (*ahem*, mother). The thing about it is people can recommend products to you, but not every product will work well on every hair type so it's trial and error. Like, something may do wonders for me and you might try it and it does nothing for you. But I will list some products I often hear mentioned by ppl with natural hair:
1. Pantene ProV Relaxed and Natural (what I use)
2. Mane n' Tail (what I also use sometimes)
3. Cantu products
4. I want to try Pantene Curls- i think that's what it's called- it comes in a white bottle
5. Wave products
*IMPORTANT*
Once you have more un-permed hair, get an extra-wide tooth comb. Mine is like my best friend xD. Combs with smaller teeth may break your hair.
Styling, it sounds like you're just starting to transition, so braids are good. Or, you can do braid outs or twist outs. My favorite thing to do was (and still is) to do two strand twists all over my head with some sort of setting lotion and rod them (because of the perm at my ends-I didn't want random straight pieces). I'd take them out in the morning and my hair would be super curly. Then, I'd either twist big pieces going back and then pin them so the bottoms were out or i'd pin my hair up on the sides for a faux-hawk type look.
That's all I can think of now.
Good luck girl!
Edit: Ah! another thing- the point where your permed and unpermed hair meets is very weak. This is why you use the wide-toothed comb. Try not to put a lot of tension on your hair. I, personally, avoid combing my hair unless it's wet.
And like the person above me said, don't use a lot of heat- it's bad for both permed and unpermed hair. Try wearing styles that need minimal or no heat.
REUSE, RECYCLE & RELAX!
