i put an old Harddrive into my pc, but now all i get is a black screen with a flashing hyphen at the top left.
my fan stopped working, so the pc shut down, it over heated. i put the harddrive in another PC,i know it works, but get a blak screen with flashing bar. the harddrive shows up in my setup, i see it's size, but not it's sectors, or head s, or cylinders info in the IDE Devices table. i would really like to salvage the info on the drive, but if thats not possible, can i reinstall windows on it properly?
i just tryed to boot from the windows cd, but it freezes at the "press any key to boot from cd..." screen. I'm at a loss could the overheating have damaged it that badly?
The flashing hyphen is the system trying to find a boot device or is waiting on a possible boot device to respond.
If your main objective is data recovery, I recomend hooking the drive up in another machine as a secondary drive. That way you can use the host machine's OS w/o having to reinstall the OS on the original drive and possible overwrite anything. Once data is secure, run a chkdsk from a command prompt and or a scandisk, depending on what version of windows you are using... heck run em both.. give the drive a good work out. If drive comes back as good, you could try doing a repair load of the OS or do a clean install and pull your data back afterwords... hope something helped!
